Ideas

I've run across this quote a number of times recently, and have to agree with it 100%.

I believe that it is difficult to kill an idea because ideas are invisible and contagious, and they move fast. I believe that you can set your own ideas against ideas you dislike. That you should be free to argue, explain, clarify, debate, offend, insult, rage, mock, sing, dramatize, and deny. I do not believe that burning, murdering, exploding people, smashing their heads with rocks (to let the bad ideas out), drowning them or even defeating them will work to contain ideas you do not like. Ideas spring up where you do not expect them, like weeds, and are as difficult to control. I believe that repressing ideas spreads ideas. ~ Neil Gaiman

Ideas are contagious, and they breed worse than bunny rabbits. The more you try to contain them, the more they spread and the harder it becomes. Trying to repress an idea could be dangerous to your mental health. If you can't talk it out, then write it down, build on it, shape it. Add the other ideas that will inevitably follow. Don't try to stuff them into the deepest darkest part of yourself, you will only create irreparable harm when your brain blows up from the pressure of trying to contain an ever increasing babble of ideas.

As a writer I let one idea percolate within when it feels right. The idea soon expands into a linking set of ideas and thoughts. Ever growing until it is just too much to keep and I have to let it out or pay the consequences. That is when the plot outline is scribbled down.

Sometimes I will have an errant thought and have to scribble it down so I do not forget. I have a black hole within the library called memory, and sometimes things vanish. I never know if an idea will expand like a dry sponge when it meets with water, or fall forever away into the cold dark depths. So I tend to write them down.

Ideas can come from a myriad of places, feelings, things, people... the origins are as endless as the ideas themselves. They are fascinating - living, growing, mutating and tickling the imagination and minds of those who have them.

Ideas are good. Ideas are self-expression. Pay attention to your ideas and see where they will lead you!
